Blog #3

I came across this article on multiple social media platforms, as well as seeing friends take part in this witty response concerning female scientist. To break things down, Tim Hunt, a Nobel Prize-winning male scientist gave a sexist remark about female scientist at a conference, stating that “Three things happen when they are in the lab: You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticize them, they cry.” Naturally, females in the science community were not happy. However, the responses and utilization of social media women are using in regards to Hunt’s comment is very interesting. The hashtag, #distractinglysexy, was created on Twitter, as female scientist would then post “sexy” photos of themselves in their labs. Instead of seeing a typical angry response, which we usually see in media and social media, the female science community responded in a witty, sarcastic, and humorous way that resulted in high transivity across large communities. In general, it is interesting to see how transivity flows through a network, which in this case, would be social media. One comment generated hundreds of responses, and because of social media, it strengthened and brought a community together.

  1. There certainly is a new possibility in media of getting large groups together to turn a bad situation into something good. When it comes to body acceptance I've witnessed this go down many times on twitter and facebook. I just worry that moments may happen where an individual gets swarmed before the full story is out there.
