Marxist Analysis

The episode “I wasn’t Ready” focuses on how difficult life can be in a prison. Although the episode focuses on one main character, Leonor, yet there are other characters that played an important role as well.  The episode contains inaccurate information. The first false statement made by the episode was how easy it was for the inmates to wear make-up and jewelry. For example some of the attractive characters wore make-up in prison. In the real prison system inmates don’t have those privileges. In the episode the “nun” and “addict” were dressed as if they were not the attractive characters, and that gives the false impression that those type of people are not attractive. The second false assumption that was shown is when the inmates were going to take a shower. When the inmate Leonor did not have sandals she was persuaded to wear sandals due to the story other inmates told her about fungi. After hearing about the possibility of fungi in the shower she made herself a pair of sandals to wear in the shower.

Furthermore, one gets the message that in prison favors are exchanged for other favors and nothing is given free. For instance, after Leonor was introduced to other inmates in the cafeteria she was given a yogurt, before she received the item she asked what did she have to do in return, the dominate inmate said nothing but in reality if she took the yogurt she would have to accept the cafeteria food that was given to her without making any negative remarks. This is true because after she made a negative comment about the food the inmate that was in control of the cafeteria gave her an unpleasant item. According to the other inmates she made a mistake by making those remarks. After the incident Leonor realized she did not belong to the system.

  1. Hey Marco,
Great observation on the statement made about make-up and jewelry in the beginning of the episode. I didn't catch that! The producers definitely downplayed some characters make up and jewelry to prove the stereotypes of nuns and drug addicts.

  2. I like how you point out that no one helps her. She has to make her own sandals, she has to figure out how to make things right with the chef. She is on her own.
