Initially I was going to comment on the McKinney pool party because it all happened right down the street from my house. However, the story of Rachel Dolezal was brought to my attention today and seems to be worth mentioning instead. Rachel is a Caucasian lady who has been pretending to be an African American. She has also been employed by the NAACP and has been known to give advice to African American’s in regards to racial issues. In fact, she has been known to cite her own personal experiences as examples of racism that she has faced her personal life.

One of the most interesting parts of this story is that the NAACP seems to support her, even though she is now proven to be dishonest. They released a statement indicating that being an African American was not a requirement for her position. It is also worth noting that it was her parents that were responsible for blowing her cover.

Finally, the most interesting of all is that even though Rachel has been proven to be a liar, and even misrepresented herself on job applications, it seems like there is not a calling for any real action against her. It seems that she has used unethical practices for her personal advancement and the cost of a minority group with little backlash from the media. At one point in the article listed below the story of Bruce Jenner’s transgender process is mentioned while that had no bearing on this story. The only conclusion that can be made from this is that the newspaper has decided to treat this like an unusual tabloid story versus the real social injustice and potentially criminal act that it may actually be.

  1. From what I have read, I am really not a fan of this lady. I agree in that I think she has used this for her own personal advancement, and I think it's a little scary/strange that she is associated with the NAACP...
