Blog #5

Summer is coming. As a Texan lives in a super hot central area, we all like to have a vacation such as jump to the ocean and get some cool feeling.  But, flesh-eating bacteria that have already killed two people in South beach recently. The bacteria normally thrive in warm water such as oceans, rivers and lakes. This season, Florida’s water temperatures are pushed to warm level than before.  The warm water helps the vibrio vulnificus to sustain in Gulf Coast states for an expanded period.  Vibrio Vulnificus is a bacterium cause cholera and normally lives in warm seawater. It is part of vibrios called “halophilic” cause they needs salt. For healthy people who is infected of V, vulnificus can cause vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. For immunocompromised persons, vulnificus can infect the bloodstream cause a life-threatening illness by chill and fever. In the article, they give some suggestion including people with open wounds; cuts or scrapes should not enter warm oceans. Otherwise, we should be carefully cook with shellfish cause it may remain bacteria.
People always ask why are should care about media and news? Does really affect our life? Dobelli stated: “ News is easy to digest. The media feeds us small bites of trivial matter, tidbits that don’t really concern our lives and don’t require thinking. “ (Dobelli 2013) For example, a car drives over a bridge and the bridge collapses. What does the media focus on this event? The answer is car. What kind of car does that person driving? Where he planned to go and where he came from? Does this information really relevant? What kind of information can help people avoid risk? I like the news about flesh-eating bacteria cause it gives people an idea about this disease and how we can protect ourself when we are in this satiation.
