White Turning Black

Rachel Dolezal was a member of the NAACP, she resigned Monday, June 15 after being on the spotlight for lying about her racial status. She was born white but eventually at one point in her life became African American. According to CNN her parents “alleged that she has been lying and presenting herself as black when she is not.”

One of the things that upsets me about this topic is that no one from the NAACP or other organization has supported her for what she did. People may be upset because she lied about her racial status but she wanted to stand up for what was right for other racial groups. Maybe at one point in her life she wanted to be black but was not able to change her racial status legally because there is no process to do it. Is there a difference if she is Black or White? We should not criticize her for lying, instead we should applaud her for supporting different racial groups and being a leader.

  1. I feel sad for her being confronted like that and now all over the media. How many us have told lies and exaggerated the truth? We have learned about why we lie in Social pyschology class there are many reasons why...it doesn't make it right but it happens for good and bad reasons. Here are great articles lying: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/the-filter/11231817/The-science-of-why-we-lie.html

  2. Personally what upsets me is her lack of respect for those of the African-American race. There is a tragic history of persecution and discrimination that is laced into the African American community and I do not think that because Rachel chose to change her physical features to appear more ethnic should have the right to claim she has experienced similar hardships.

  3. I think the problem here is that she went about everything is a deceitful manner. She should have been honest about who she was instead of claiming the hardships of another race as her own.
