Blog Post # 8 - Taylor Swift World Domination

Where does Taylor Swift not have the upper hand? Before we know it, maybe she'll be calling the shots in the White House. Hopefully not, but you know what I mean.

Taylor Swift made a huge splash in the media this week after an open letter she wrote to Apple and posted to her tumblr. In the letter, Taylor respectfully calls out Apple on their policy to not compensate artists during the 3 months of free streaming they provide to subscribers using Apple Music. She explains how Apple is a company known for their innovation and creativity in their field and that it's unfair for them to not compensate artists, producers and directors who show just as much innovation and creativity in their field. Taylor explains how the purpose of her letter isn't about how the policy would affect her, but how it would affect the countless indie artists, producers and directors who need the royalties. Long story short, Apple made the decision to compensate artists during the 3 month trial period. The fact that a letter posted on tumblr had the power to change the course of a billion dollar company is mind blowing. Taylor Swift is using her platform to better the world around her. This makes me hopeful that other celebrities would do the same.

  1. She made a great argument, and stated her point without showing disrespect to Apple. Regardless of whether she truly has the best intentions for other artists at heart, or if there is a hidden personal reason, she absolutely did a great thing here.

  2. Good to see someone with such immense power in the music industry standing up for not only herself, but others. Imagine if we saw this sort of things with popular YouTubers who are facing unfair funding as well?

  3. I love Taylor Swift! She is such an inspiring celebrity, someone that people can really look up to. She always stands her ground and sticks up for what she believes in without being harsh or rude to others. If only everybody could handle issues with such grace.

  4. I always admire how she handles situations! There are a lot of younger people who look up to her, so it's nice to know she is being a positive influence on them. I agree with Leah. If only everybody could handle situations this gracefully.

  5. If we could only have Taylor Swift talk to young girls across the world in an educational setting, we may get somewhere with the messages "Miss Representation" would like for all to be conscientious of.

  6. This is an interesting story. I think that it is good that she stood up and spoke out like this. I would have rather seen her do this though for a cause that would have benefited her fans and society though.
